This cosy, casual family restaurant caters for all and offers a delicious selection of hearty meals. If you are after a good piece of meat, try the sumptuous steaks or perhaps one of the beefy burgers.
There is fish and a selection of pizzas to choose from or perhaps you would like to try the famous tripe. Popular for the chips and the milkshakes, kids are always happy with their meal. Vegetarian options are available as are take-aways if you prefer to eat in the comfort of your own home.
This beautiful beach hike takes place within the new extension of the Namaqua National Park between the Spoeg and Groen rivers. Most people try to do the trail during the flower season – between late August and early October the trail is described as so unique that there is no other hike to compare.
But those who have gone before say that there is more than enough to merit doing the hike at other times of the year – whale sightings, rock pools brimming over with marine life, the second largest seal colony along the West Coast and over 150 birds that include Ludwig’s bustard, steppe buzzard and the African oystercatcher – although you might want to bear in mind that summer can get very hot in the Northern Cape.
The Northern Cape offers a different terrain for those who do not often visit. Goegap Nature Reserve is beautiful and desert-like; a harsh terrain that is a melting pot of kokerbome (giant aloes) and halfmens trees, great swathes of sand, rocks, and boulders that provide a backdrop for hardy zebra and the odd klipspringer.
Roughly 35 km of 4×4 tracks serve as your playground with a start at the reserve office, before riding up a narrow valley that cuts through the huge granite boulders of the Klein Koperberge (small copper mountains).
22 km of 4×4 track form a basic circular route through semi-desert and sand with some rocky sections, whilst other gravel roads create additional options to vary the route.
Your bike skills are put to the test through patches of sand, a couple of gentle climbs and a steep ascent to the top of Carolusberg, the Goegap’s highest point, but consult the map and you can work out a variant to avoid the harsh bits of this largely uncharted landscape.
It’s highly likely you won’t see another rider for the duration of your ride.
Pick up a map from the Goegap Nature Reserve office. A conservation and levy fee are involved.
The Goegap MTB Race is an annual 60 km through the reserve with two available routes – 30 km and 60km.
If riding during spring, include the Hester Malan Wild Flower Garden, also in the reserve.
Die Klipkoppie
Situated right in the center of town in modern days this is a landmark used by many when they give directions to some place in town …. “At the klipkoppie turn left”, or “Drive past the klipkoppie and then you will see this or that on you right hand side …” …. “NO in the OTHER direction past the klipkoppie! :-)”
It is also decorated over the Christmas season for the annual Lights Festival taking place in early December.
The plaques on the klipkoppie however also tells of live and death in history, when during the Anglo-Boer war of 1899 to 1902 shots where fired and people died here in a fight for control of this koppie as a strategically placed stronghold.
The vegetation on the koppie is typical of the area, and can be regarded as a miniature nature reserve. Many a photographer has captured the koppie in varying angles and degrees of sunlight.
Burke’s Pass takes one through the mountains south of Springbok, in the Northern Cape, to Kamieskroon – the tiny dorp that is more NG Church than it is town. The beauty of the bare granite against red soil, and the stubbly yellow grass and shrubs lining the pass, an indication of the heat on the N7.
This is Namaqualand. Dry it might be for most of the year, but it rains here in winter, and in spring it flowers. Everywhere.
Burke’s pass is tarred, one of the few passes in the Northern Cape that is as easy for sedans to navigate. It is a popular pass as a result, not only for the spring flowers but also as passage to the Namaqua National Park just west of the N7 – to reach the park one must peal off the N7 not far from Burke’s Pass.

HPS specialized in blasting work in the Northern Cape area, building a reputation for quality, fast and honest work ethics, HPS was forced to expand into Plant Hire in 2003 by the demand for soil preparation. The very first machine was a Komatsu PC 200 excavator, expanding from blasting to earth works and later to civil works as well.
Mr. Bertie Hanekom, son of Mr. Albert Hanekom, joined the team in 2005 to help manage the fast growing company. Mr. Bertie Hanekom studied a National Diploma in Financial Management and took part as plant manager while helping with the tender processes and budgeting debtors and creditors.
Mr. Albert Hanekom stayed focus on building strong relationships with old and new clients with the company’s core policy still been “quality & reliability”. Mr. Hansie Hanekom, youngest son of Mr. Albert Hanekom, started his career at HPS in 2013.
HPC was born
HPS decided to change the name from HPS to HPC to deal with expansions in the Plant hire departments and Civil projects departments.
Mr. Hansie Hanekom studied for a national diploma in building and then took his studies further and completed a B.Tech degree in Quantity Surveying.
He took over the tender processes with the guidance and help of Mr. Albert Hanekom. The father and son combination prove to be working well as Mr. Bertie Hanekom focused on plant hire and earth works while Mr. Hansie Hanekom concentrated on tendering and civil projects, and Mr. Albert Hanekom on quality control, client satisfaction and general management of the two divisions under the HPC banner.
